The Southern Screamer is a big bird and can reach almost 1 metre with a wingspan of about 170 cm. They generally live near water but prefer to be on the ground. When disturbed, they fly off making a lot of noise, explaining the name.

The Southern Screamer establishes monogamous relationships that last its lifetime, estimated to be 15 years. Courtship involves loud calling by both sexes, which can be heard up to 3 kilometres away.
